Adjusted phone hours for the study counselling

Miriam Thegel är en framstående forskare inom spansk språkvetenskap vid Uppsala universitet. Hon disputerade vid Uppsala universitet 2017 och har därefter bedrivit forskning i Belgien samt varit anställd vid Umeå universitet. Hon är nu aktuell som nyanställd biträdande universitetslektor. En ny polsk grammatik har utarbetats vid institutionen - den första heltäckande polska grammatikboken på svenska sedan 1946. Författare är M. Anna Packalén Parkman och Magdalena Slyk.

Jag har valt att intervjua Christina Kullberg om senaste Nobelpristagaren i litteratur. Detta då hon som professor i fransk litteratur är specialist på fransk och franskspråkig 1900-talslitteratur. Om du vill snabbt få en uppfattning av Annie Ernaux författarskap så finns flera av hennes romaner på närmaste bibliotek och på SVT Play finns en film baserad på romanen Omständigheter.

Vid Institutionen för Moderna språk arbetar vi med SI - Supplemental Instruction, inom ämnena franska, spanska och tyska. De av våra mer erfarna studenter som är villiga att utbildas till SI-ledare stödjer A-studenterna i deras lärande utifrån de behov som de själva känner att de har, under ett antal SI-PASS (PASS står för Peer Assisted Study Sessions).

Det har varit generationsskifte i ämnet estniska vid institutionen. Vår informatör Per Eriksson har intervjuat Geda Paulsen och Eva Velsker som härom året tog över efter Raimo och Virve Raag.

Du som har läst minst 60 hp i ett språk, studerar på heltid vid Uppsala universitet och har för avsikt att ta ut en examen här kan ansöka om utbytesstudier via Institutionen för Moderna språk. Informationsträff om utbytesmöjligheter via institutionens avtal kommer att hållas på fredag den 23 september kl 12.30 – 13.00.

Europeiska språkdagen, som firas sedan 2001 på initiativ av EU och Europarådet, infaller den 26 september varje år. I år kommer dagen att uppmärksammas vid Uppsala universitet för första gången på länge. Initiativtagare är Charlotte Lindgren, Maria Håkansson-Ramberg och Fredrika Nyström. Alla tre verkar på olika sätt vid Institution för moderna språk samt vid EDU.

Grattis till din docentur i ryska Anastasia Makarova!

I de pågående intervjuserierna Språk i fokus och Litteratur i fokus har nu turen kommit till litteraturvetaren Helga Müllneritsch, som är postdoktor i tyska. Vi hade ett intressant samtal den 30 mars 2022 om kultur, litteratur och om kvinnors position i 1700-talets Österrike.

I vår informatör Per Erikssons intervjuserie Språk i fokus har turen att bli intervjuad denna gång kommit till Entela Tabaku Sörman.

När vi bänkade oss i Humanistiska teatern den 15 mars 2022 - eller kopplade upp oss via Zoom - var det för att lyssna till en minst sagt högaktuell författare; den svenska översättningen av Fernanda Melchors bok Paradais hamnade på bokhandelsdiskarna så sent som i början av februari. Nu, en dryg månad senare, bjöd Romanska seminariet och nätverket LILAe in till ett samtal mellan Melchor och litteraturvetaren/kritikern Amelie Björk.

Den 21 januari 2022 hade jag förmånen att få intervjua Maria Håkansson Ramberg om hennes doktorsavhandling Validität und schriftliche Sprachkompetenz: Eine Studie zur Bewertung schriftlicher Leistungen im Fach Deutsch an schwedischen Schulen. Den handlar om olika aspekter när lärare bedömer elevernas skriftliga kompetens i tyska och där framkommer att diskussioner och mer samarbete mellan lärare skulle kunna förbättra likvärdigheten i dessa bedömningar.

Vi gratulerar vår alumn och kollega Nils Håkansson som tilldelats Augustpriset i fackbokskategorin för boken Dolda gudar – En bok om allt som inte går förlorat i en översättning!

P g a pandemin har vi under lång tid endast haft mottagning per telefon och e-post på expeditionen och studievägledningen, men fr o m den 30 september har vi åter fysiska öppettider.

Två av institutionens medarbetare, Rogier Blokland och Riitta-Liisa Valijärvi, håller just nu på och skriver en grammatik i meänkieli tillsammans med Elina Kangas vid Språkrådet.

Det är alltid roligt när institutionens medarbetare och kurser uppmärksammas i medierna. Nu senast (12 september) är det UNT som skriver om Julie Hansen och den tvärvetenskapliga kursen "Fakta och fiktion: Vetenskap, samhällskriser och individens roll i skönlitteraturen", som hon anordnar tillsammans med Alexandra Borg (Institutionen för nordiska språk), Cecilia Gustavsson (Institutionen för fysik och astronomi), Margareta Krabbe (Institutionen för biologisk grundutbildning) och Torsten Pettersson (Litteraturvetenskapliga institutionen).

Juliette Drouet was the actress who became Victor Hugo’s companion. During 50 years, she wrote about 22,000 letters to him, letters that have been preserved and that give an invaluable insight into Paris and Europe of the 19th century. Sylviane Robardey-Eppstein, from the Department of Modern Languages is part of a project whose purpose is to make the letters intelligible, and available online.

Christina Kullberg, professor of French, especially French and Francophone literatures, is the contributor of the Caribbean perspective in a new history of literature, which will be published at the beginning of May. “Natur & Kulturs litteraturhistoria” is written with the ambition to cover the entire literature of the world from the first writing systems to today’s e-books, and to become the new standard work of literary history for students of comparative literature in Sweden.

We live in a time of common challenges on a great scale. The pandemic and the climate crisis are two of the more apparent ones. They are also examples of challenges where science is expected to come up with solutions. Next semester, autumn 2021, a new evening course starts. A course where you will learn to critically analyse narratives of how science tackles societal crises.

Hans Kronning, professor at the Department of Modern Languages, will present his research about “quantifiers of factual proximity” and counterfactuality, at an international conference in Alicante, Spain.

María Teresa Navarrete is a new associate senior lecturer in Spanish literature at the Department of Modern Languages.

Our seminar programmes for the spring semester 2021 are ready. The Finno-Ugric seminar, the German seminar, the Romance seminar and the Uppsala Travel Writing Seminar will arrange some 15 events together. All will be held online. The Slavic seminar and the seminar for Romance literary studies will take a break during the 2021 spring semester.

Nu på fredag, 29 januari 2021, firar vi den nya antologin ”Språkdidaktik i praktiken: Metoder, exempel och reflektioner från högskolenivå” med ett fakultetsövergripande seminarium. I publikationen bidrar författare med ny kunskap om undervisningsmetodik ur olika synvinklar.

The nomination for Uppsala University's pedagogical awards for outstanding contributions within education is open for students and teachers. Deadline for nomination is 18 March 2021.

Geda Paulsen is a new senior lecturer in Estonian at the Department of Modern Languages. Her most recent position was as a senior researcher; she has also worked as a senior lexicographer and participated in the creation of dictionaries at the Institute of the Estonian Language in Tallinn, Estonia.

Helga Müllneritsch has begun as a postdoc in German at the Department of Modern Languages.

Anastasia Makarova has joined the Department of Modern Languages as a senior lecturer in Russian. Anastasia Makarova has most recently been working at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, where she did her PhD, and subsequently spent the last decade. Makarova has graduated from S:t Petersburg State University where she studied Russian and linguistics. 

Artist seeking to maximise their income from heavy metal music are wise to choose English as their language. But some artists act differently, for different reasons. Some even sing in languages like Yiddish, Latin or Swedish – in Finland. And the lyrics can be about death, medieval knights and war. But also about Baudelaire, pacifism or chocolate craving. In a new anthology, published just on time for Christmas, you can take part of researchers analyses of metal lyrics.

Modern languages’ Maria Engström has been promoted to Professor in Russian, after a decision by the vice-chancellor. Maria Engström is an international authority on neo-conservatism in contemporary Russian culture and politics.

Hanna Henryson is a researcher in German and a new doctor at the Department of Modern Languages. In her thesis, she concludes that East Germans, workers and migrants are peripheral when German novelists depict the transformation of Berlin's residential zones after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Instead, it is the perspective of the German middle class that dominates.

Coco Norén, professor in French at the Department of Modern Languages and Dean of the Faculty of Languages, was today appointed new Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University. She will assume her new position 1 January 2021.

The Swedish Research Council has awarded a grant to a new research project, which will analyse “The Neo-Soviet Myth”, a unity of ideas, images, and practices in today’s Russian culture and politics where the Soviet modernisation project and its rhetoric is reconceptualised and recycled. Maria Engström, Associate Professor at the Department of Modern Languages, leads the project.

Due to the authorities stricter general guidelines, the German Movie Night scheduled for 10 November is cancelled.

Earlier this autumn we extended the phone hours for the department's study counselling. We will continue having extended phone hours and now we have scheduled the morning phone hour earlier and the afternoon phone hour later. The reason is to have separate phone hours for the study counselling and the Departmental Office.

Modern Languages' Christina Kullberg has been promoted to Professor in French, in particular French literature, after a decision by the vice-chancellor. Christina Kullberg is a leading expert in French post-colonial and caribbean literature.

Constanze Ackermann-Boström is awarded the Westinska prize of 30,000 SEK by the Kungl. Humanistiska Vetenskaps-Samfundet i Uppsala. She is awarded the prize for her doctoral thesis, which she wrote and defended at the Department of Modern Languages.

The Public Health Agency of Sweden has decided to instate stricter general guidelines in Uppsala. This means that the Department of Modern Languages changes to distance education only, effective immediately. The decision applies until the end of the semester, 17 January 2021, but may be extended.

Thirty years have passed since the Soviet Union collapsed and the Berlin Wall fell. It has been a period of upheaval in many ways, but one development is clear in many of the countries that constituted the former Eastern Bloc. Nationalism in different shapes has become an important part of the self-image. In the new course “Post-Socialist Nationalisms in Literature, Film and Art” you can learn more about how nationalism has taken form.

Spring application deadline was 15 October 2020. The admissions results will be published on 10 December 2020 and after that you will have until 16 December 2020 to reply. But if you were late or reconsider what you want to do there is an additional possibility. From 15 December 2020 you can submit a late application for many courses at the Department of Modern Languages.

If you are proficient at upper-secondary level in French, German or Spanish - but lack the entry requirements from either the upper-secondary school or from our introductionary courses - you can take an eligibility test in order to meet the requirements for our A level courses.

The Department of Modern Languages has five seminars. We also arrange the Uppsala Travel Writing Seminar in collaboration with the Department of Literature. This far the programmes for the Romance Seminar and the German Seminar are ready and published on the department website.

In Anne Swärd's novel ”Breathless” from 2010 we meet seven year old Lo and get to follow her as she grows up. The novel takes us to places like Stockholm, Krakow, Budapest and New York. And we get to know the men Lo meet. Not least Lukas, the boy next door, who is 13 when the story begins, and who will come to play an important role in Lo's life.
